Finally saw the movie ‘Annie Hall’ from 1977 for the first time this weekend…full of wonderful moments and with Woody Allen in all his neurotic glory, combined with the scatterbrained charm of a young Diane Keaton.
I loved the ending…where Woody narrates a joke and compares it to relationships…and why we put up with everything that comes with the package.
Alvy Singer: [narrating] After that it got pretty late, and we both had to go, but it was great seeing Annie again. I… I realized what a terrific person she was, and… and how much fun it was just knowing her; and I… I, I thought of that old joke, y’know, the, this… this guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, “Doc, uh, my brother’s crazy; he thinks he’s a chicken.” And, uh, the doctor says, “Well, why don’t you turn him in?” The guy says, “I would, but I need the eggs.” Well, I guess that’s pretty much now how I feel about relationships; y’know, they’re totally irrational, and crazy, and absurd, and… but, uh, I guess we keep goin’ through it because, uh, most of us… need the eggs.

Does too much analysis really lead to paralysis?

In a world that’s moving faster and faster each day…quick decisions can mean the difference between success and failure. But is this culture of ‘action, shorter attention spans and fragile relationships’ leading to a different sort of paralysis? A paralysis of the human heart and the soul? We’ve achieved so much as a civilization (and at an increasingly accelerated pace) - will we be able to make it over the destructive peak that a lot of other advanced civilizations failed at? What about love - what defines true love? Why are the greatest, most memorable romances always tragedies? Is ignorance really bliss?
